Missing: Nichole Cable, Maine

A mother desperate to find her daughter has turned to police and social media to get help.
Kristine Wiley says her 15 year old daughter has not been heard from since Sunday night.
Initially, Wiley turned to social media after talking with authorities and the post suggested her daughter Nichole Cable was with a teenage boy, but Wiley says that teenage boy has reported that his facebook page had been hacked and he’s been cleared as far as she’s concerned.
Wiley says she’s doesn’t know what has happened to her daughter or if she left willingly with someone, but she left personal belongings like her cell phone charger and makeup behind. She says they had not had a fight and her daughter told her she was meeting a friend she was familiar with in the driveway of the home. Nichole failed to return home.
Wiley says she’s been told by other teenage girls attending Old Town High school, who are friends with Nichole, that some guy had been reaching out to them via facebook and they had denied his request to meet up with him. She says none of Nichole’s friends have heard from her.
Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Shawn McCue says the case is under investigation and when I asked if he thought Nichole could be in danger his response was, “It’s possible.” However, my initial interview was cut short because of cell phone interference.  I will continue to follow up on this story.
If you have any information about the where about of 15 year old Nichole Cable, you’re encouraged to contact Deputy McCue with the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.

"She says they had not had a fight"had anyone suggested they "Had"? Im "Me"Again.

Leaving her cell charger and makeup behind suggests that she was not planning on being gone long. My guess is she was pulled into the car by the person she met at the end if the driveway. The police need to find out who that was asap.

I hope this is not a copycat. When there is extensive media coverage of an event, such as the young women who were kidnapped and held hostage in Cleveland, it often gives other people on the edge ideas that they can do the same.

How about as far as the police are concerned?

when the mom says they had not had a fight... i detect deception

Kristine Wiley says her 15 year old daughter has not been heard from since Sunday night... mom indicates not heard from, but what about seen.

Initially, Wiley turned to social media after talking with authorities and the post suggested her daughter Nichole Cable was with a teenage boy, but Wiley says that teenage boy has reported that his facebook page had been hacked and he’s been cleared as far as she’s concerned... what about who cleared him or did not. police clear him or did the mom clear him because she knows who the daughter is with or were.

Wiley says she’s doesn’t know what has happened to her daughter or if she left willingly with someone, but she left personal belongings like her cell phone charger and makeup behind... why does the mom think she might have left willing with someone or ?

She says they had not had a fight and her daughter told her she was meeting a friend she was familiar with in the driveway of the home... mom is leaving out important information as she states they had not had fight which indicates they have fought before and maybe that night. also her daughter tells her mom she meeting a friend she "was" past tense, familiar with. is she no longer familiar with because she the daughter is dead?

Nichole failed to return home. this sentence bothers me, not sure why but the word "failed" in past tense makes me think this has happened before.

Wiley says she’s been told by other teenage girls attending Old Town High school, who are friends with Nichole, that some guy had been reaching out to them via facebook and they had denied his request to meet up with him. again past tense, some guy had been not was reaching out but had been and the friends had denied his request being in the past not present.

there is my novice and very raw statemetn analysis, thanks

They probably asked her if they fought...hence the statement "they didn't fight".
I'm more concerned about the "hacked facebook" sounds like bs to me...

anon 11:23pm, the statement by the mother is not a direct quote, so we don't know what tense she actually used. we also don't know what questions were used to obtain the interview.

sounds like there are a lot of clues to zero in on the guy who was facebooking her.

While I usually understand the concept within statements about what one did NOT do (things stated in the negative), this one seems a bit different. Let me explain:

First, in this article, I noticed that the phrasing was, "so-and-so says that..." rather than giving quotes of what the mother said and what was asked of her prior to that statement. This matters.

When a 15-yr-old goes missing, "runaway" is the FIRST thing on any investigator's mind, and it's the dearest hope for the parents (because the alternative would mean their child is in the hands of a kidnapper or worse). If we assume the mother's statements about her daughter meeting a friend in the driveway are true (and we have no reason not to at this point), then LE would most likely be asking all the "runaway" questions just prior to this mother's interview with the media. Such a line of questioning will certainly include inquiries about the current status of the parent-child relationship, whether there were any arguments, and if any, what they were about.

Based on info that LE allows the media to access, reporters will form their line of questions, and often rehash the same things over again in the interview with the parents.

Since the statements made by the mother here are not direct quotes, and since there is nothing to indicate the questions asked of her (which would provide an idea as to why she mentioned not fighting with her daughter), I don't think we can conclude sensitivity in that statement just yet.

Hypothetical Example: Police are not ruling out "runaway." They are probing Mom for anything that may indicate a reason for her daughter to want to leave home (VERY likely, at this juncture, actually).

They ask, "did you and your daughter fight over anything in the last couple of days?" During the course of questioning, they ask a number of variations of this same question, trying to help Mom pick her brain for any indicators as to where her daughter may have gone. Then, the media gets wind of where the investigation stands at the moment, and pursues the very same questions when Mom reaches out to the media.

The interviewer asks, "Do you have any reason to think your daughter may have run away? Have there been any fights recently; has she seemed unhappy over anything?"

If there had not been any fights lately, Mom would, of course, answer, "No, we haven't had any fights." There is really no other way to report that information, so I don't think it's automatically sensitive.

Also, even if the reporter hadn't asked that question of the mother, and reasonable sensitivity were indicated in her statement about fights, the sensitivity could very well be due to the fact that she has been through this line of questions with LE multiple times, and is becoming frustrated, since runaways are often not treated as urgent as kidnappings. She may be assuming that everyone just thinks her daughter wanted to get away, and is issuing a "preemptive strike," if you will, before the reporter takes a route she's already traveled and cleared.

I certainly don't know all the facts yet, and could be way off-base. It's just early in the investigation, and the article didn't offer much in the way of actual quotes from anyone involved.

A number of teens run away for a few days, and they are turned in or found, or come home on their own. I hope this happens very soon.
My neighbor temporarily lost her son earlier today, and she's a vigilant mother. She freaked out, we helped her look for him. The father had taken him for a ride and wires got crossed, he was tracked down with a phone call. I wasn't there to see what she did to her husband but I don't think it'll happen again. Innocent moms freak the heck out when they can't find their bebes.

rkg said...

I agree with other posters; the mom's statement is FAR less concerning than the Facebook guy. That seems to be the logical starting point, in my opinion.

Cable’s parents, Jason and Kristine Willey, have turned to social media in hopes that their daughter will return home safely. A Facebook group, “Bring Nichole Cable Home,” had 282 members as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.

“We have not heard any word from her through social media or friends,” Jason Willey said Tuesday. “Her phone’s been shut off. We just don’t know what else to do.”

Police agencies as far north as Ellsworth and stretching south to Scarborough have also shared information including Cable’s description on Facebook.

Cable has light brown hair and blue eyes and weighs 90 pounds, according to Ross. She was last seen wearing a pair of jeans and a pink sweatshirt, her father said.

She was last seen at 9 p.m. on Sunday, said Chief Deputy Troy Morton.

“Her parents immediately reported this to us once they knew that she was missing,” said Morton. “The sheriff’s office responded to that complaint and we’ve continued to do our investigations. We are using outside resources such as the Internet and phone capabilities in an attempt to locate her.”

It's impossible to use this sample for SA as it's being filtered through the police department, and we don't know what the mother was responding to, or if she was offering those statements in her own language. So you can't reasonably detect deception. Yet.

Is this article from a newspaper or a social media site? It lacks a lot if information from the author, regardless of cell service availability....

At this point, I don't see how this mother could speak in any other way than 'in the past tense' since it was past tense that the daughter was said to have met someone on the driveway: past tense. Also, she left her phone charger and makeup at home: past tense. The teenaged boyfriend said that his facebook had been hacked and he had been cleared: past tense. There has been no cell ph activity from her phone: not negative per se', just a fact: past tense. The mother and daughter had not been arguing: past tense.

How else could she speak since it is all in the past tense? I agree Apple, a lot of info is missing so there is little info to go on. There'll probably be more info as time goes on.

For sure, it doesn't appear the girl ran away since she took nothing with her, or did she, since nothing is said about any missing clothes, etc.? Perhaps whoever she left with convinced her they were only going to run out for a burger or whatever, so she would have had no need to take anything with her. We don't have this info, only what she didn't take, which IMO she would have had she been planning a real runaway.

Of course, whoever picked her up off the driveway could have told her, 'don't worry about your cell ph charger, I've got one', or 'no need to worry about bringing makeup or clothes, we can get more', or something like that. (This actually happened to me once. No, I wasn't kidnapped, it was just a friend talking who wanted us to take off together on a little excursion, which we did, but also went back the same night). Personally, I think the girl was lied too and has been kidnapped by someone she hardly knew.

However, we need more info before we can come to any logical conclusion as it concerns statement analysis. At least the mother is seriously worried, is out there searching and does not appear to be pulling a 'Billie Jean' on us.

I have copied this from the Facebook page for Nichole.

It is in the 'About' section.

UPDATE: Nichole Kristine Cable was last know to be with a male using a fictitious name of Bryan Butterfield. He was using a Facebook account with that name and it has now been taken down. The authorities have no leads. Please! I am begging for help to fing my daughter and bring her home safely. Please if you have my CoCo, drop her off at a gas station or a park so she can call for help or for me to come get her. I dont care who you are, I just want her home. She's just a little girl of 15 with her whole life ahead of her. Please bring her home! Please call Officer Shawn McCue @ 2075700118 or 911 or please call me.I am her mother @ 2079491255.

S + K Mum said...

Also, the person claiming to be Bryan Butterfield apparently used stolen pictures of innocent people in his profile. Some in the photos have contacted police (I read this on the facebook page).

I think it is worthwhile to look at the Facebook page if you are around the area, it shows many pictures of Nichole, hopefully making her more recognisable. 'Bring Nichole Cable Home' is the name of the page.

S + K Mum said...

Her parents have also posted this on the Facebook page:

Please! Do not make any threats if harm to who ever CoCo is with! Please do not put out negatives. I dont want anyone scared into not doing the right thing. Just keep sharing her pictures.

These comments are a great example of how difficult it can be to stick with the basics of SA. While trying to focus on the more difficult technical aspects of it, we tend to skip the easy part e.g. is the computer plugged in.
I've been reading Peter's post over the last 3 or so years (sorry Hobs, sometimes things really do happen in 3's). It's seams to me the NUMBER 1 rule of statement analysis is there must be a statement to analyze! As far as I can tell there is only one statement available in this article "It's possible" when the Deputy was asked if he thought Nicole could be in danger. All the rest seams to be the author relaying information. I've noticed since studying under Peter people are generally piss poor at this, especially 2nd and 3rd generation information. Not to mention people will often change wording when writing an article to "make it their own". Notice the author (Peter?) only quoted what was directly told to him or her which is the way it should be.
I'm not criticizing, I notice this in myself and is one of the many things I struggle with. I'm hoping this is taken as useful food for thought only. And Hobs, no insult intended, I usually look for your post first and learn much for them :-)
There are many qualified people here and I'd love to hear from you if you have a different take on this thought. However be kind it's early and I don't need another migraine today!

C5H11ONO said...

There are no direct quotes in this article. This means that the author has written this. We do not know if the author asked the mother if she had a fight with her daughter the night before. Unless we have direct quotes, the statements made by the author about what the mother said is unreliable.

Mother is concerned with finger pointing.
First we hear of a youth whom was cleared because his facebook was haked....

Cleared of what?
Being a Magician an makeing Girls disapear?

And then onto some other facebook bogey man whom was allegedly trying to lure ?meet up?

Probably just a teen guy trying to get lucky?

So why the need for diversion why the need to emphasise ther was no fight or argument.

Was it firinstance just a normal day.
No fights no nothing to see here look away.

Look at facebook look at the inerweb lots of suss people on the net.

Always looking to steal a young girl away.
She sets up this alleged dogy guy on facebook acording to her freids.

An kinnnda insinuates that perhaps her Daughter wasnt as sensible as her freinds instincts about this dodgy dude.
Disspariging?

Its difficult to tell not hearing her words verbatim.

Just the reporters version of what he heard.

Im sure there are lots of idicaters all over if we get to hear her speak first hand.

Initial conclusion is its yet another tragic event.

And I want to be wrong.

US authorities are seeking the public's help in identifying a suspect accused of raping a young girl and producing child pornography.
Unidentified male, suspected of child rape and producing pornography ICE poster shows unidentified suspect

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released images of a man suspected of sexually assaulting the girl, who is believed to be between seven and nine years old.

The agency believes the man is located somewhere in the US, and is hoping the photos will help lead to his arrest and the girl's rescue.

Images of the suspect were pulled from videos depicting sexual abuse of the minor.

The unidentified male, believed to be between 45 and 55 years old, is balding and has a brown moustache.

ICE has encouraged anyone with information that could help identify the man to fill out an online tip form at www.ICE.gov/tips or call 1-866-347-2423 if in the US or Canada.

Callers anywhere else in the world can dial 802-872-6199.

The agency says tips will remain anonymous.

Personally knowing Nicole, I do not think that if she knew she was going to be gone for even more than a few minutes, she would not have left her phone. Also, the boy who's facebook was "hacked" has been known to be extremely creepy & strange towards girls my age. A peer who dated him said he used to try to get her to do super weird stuff (sexually), & then get extremely angry when she would refuse. From my point of view, he looks insanely guilty.

Can't the FBI find a web blueprint (address) from her computer? Wouldn't that take them to the computer? At least that would give them a place to look. They could check out the other high school girls that said that they were contacted and check their computers too for the same address. Also the boy's FB account to see who hacked it.

A person so good at hacking and all this deception and technology knowledge could have picked a better target.

Couldn't the boy still have a connection? What about a friend or family member that may have used his account?

It is probably someone who lives in the town and who saw her.......
